Choosing Your Stone
When considering an emerald cut diamond for your engagement ring, there are several key characteristics to remember to ensure you select a stone of exceptional quality and beauty. The cut and clarity play a crucial part in the diamond’s appearance. A well-proportioned cut maximizes brilliance and minimizes any visible imperfections. Symmetrical facets with clean, straight lines create the coveted hall-of-mirrors effect, but also make it easier to see inclusions. So a higher clarity grade can help ensure imperfections are not visible to the naked eye.
The elongated shape and large table of the emerald cut diamond create an elegant and timeless look, but also emphasize any color within the stone. Look for a color grade of at least an F for a stone that appears bright white, and if you prefer a warmer, slightly tinted diamond, look for a stone in the I-J range. And lastly, the length-to-width ratio of the diamond dictates the overall shape. A ratio between 1.3-1.5 creates a classic elongated shape we’re most familiar with, but you may opt for a more rectangular or more square shape based on your preferences.
