Arianna features 0.52 carats of brilliantly round diamonds in a 14k white gold setting.  At first glance, this piece looks like one large diamond surrounded by one brilliant halo.  However, upon closer examination you see that one brilliant diamond is surrounded by not one, but two halos of sparkling diamonds.  This unique diamond ring is perfect for someone who loves the look of a diamond solitaire, but with a modern update.

New Addition

Welcome our newest addition to the collection.  This is Aurora Princess Cut. The Aurora Princess cut is our sculptural take on a traditional engagement ring.  It features a unique wave-like band that elegantly contours the finger in your choice of recycled metal.  This particular Aurora, however, is a bit different and very unique.  We found a beautiful princess cut diamond in a higher grade than our standard diamond option and thought it would look beautiful on our classic Aurora band.  We were right! The brilliant 1.01ct H VS1 conflict-free diamond sits atop the band in a classic 4-prong setting. This Aurora is stunning and is a true token of promise.

Some Helpful Q & A

Q: How can I customize my engagement ring in a budget-friendly manner?

A: We understand that custom engagement rings can be costly and unpredictable, so we encourage our clients to personalize their ring instead.  Start by finding a KDD ring that you love and then personalizing it by adding an inscription, changing the finish, or adding an accent birthstone.  Send us an email to with your story, and we'll help you brainstorm for ideas.

Cupid's Kiss

Antonio Canova’s statue, Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss, is the true symbolism for love and devotion. In it you see Cupid, the god of love, waking up a lifeless Psyche by the magic of a kiss.  You can’t help but be captured by the tenderness of this moment.  Sometimes love can start simply with a kiss.

Sweet Love Spots in NYC

 Picture from

In Central Park not only can you visit and ride a 100 year old carousel, but you can also walk hand in hand while taking in the beautiful nature that surrounds you, take a boat ride below Bow Bridge, ice skate during winter months or sit by a pond or on vibrant green grass and look into the eyes of your loved one.  It’s a place of endless possibilities all year round that reminds us of why NYC is a place for LoVe.

Top 3 Places Engagement Rings Go Astray

Top 3 Places Engagement Rings Go Astray

#3 – The SINK

It’s been more often than not that we’ve heard stories about pipes having to be taken apart in order to find a missing ring.  Be careful – fingers tend to shrink when in water and soap makes for a slippery mishap.  Also, liquid soap and rings don’t mix – it builds up in the crevasses of the ring and dulls out the stone.

#2 – The GYM

Really it’s not just the gym, but anywhere where people tend to be working out – a pool or hiking on a mountain- we tend to remove our rings to avoid discomfort during these activities.  Remember to store it away somewhere safe at these locations or leave it at home and avoid the possibility of leaving it behind next to the 5 lb dumbbells.

#1 – The BEACH

Picture it – you take off your ring to put sunscreen on and lay it on your lap.  Once you are done, you get up quickly to grab a drink from the cooler before you melt in the sun.  The bad news is you forgot to put your ring back on and now its vanished in the sandy abyss.  It’s a needle in a hay stack.  Not only is the sand a scary place for jewelry, but so is the ocean.  Many lose their rings and other jewelry in the water because of waves and the fact that water shrinks our skin and makes it easy for rings to slip off.  My advice – leave the rings at home in a safe place.

Although not one of the top three places rings disappear to -it is up there in the top twenty.  Don’t leave your rings laying around the house where your pet can easily eat it up or you’ll be making a costly trip to the vet.

Love In a Jar

Pic by Heidi Ruotolo on Pinterest

On Pinterest I saw a picture of fall, colored leaves being illuminated in a glass jar by candle light and couldn’t help but think of how inspiration can come from anywhere for anything at any moment.  When I saw this picture it took me to a place of pure happiness instantly– a place that made me feel comfort, safety, warmness, and security.  Then I started thinking about how all those feelings are significant when we think of finding a mate.  How awesome would it be to create something that can exhibit all those traits at once for your partner? Here is where the inspiration from that picture took me….

We bought some beautiful new flowers for the studio and decided to use them as the backdrop for our Private Collection.  I'm absolutely in  love our new diamond additions -- Norah, Adele, Petal, and Florence.

One of the main reasons we launched the Private Collection was to provide our clients with accessible engagement rings under $2000.  All of these pieces are vintage, estate, or industry finds and are beautifully made in either 14k or 18k gold.

And remember that each piece in the Private Collection is limited edition, or in most cases, one-of-a-kind.  They cannot be re-created once they've sold out.

What is rhodium plating?

If you fancy a white gold engagement ring, chances are you've heard the term "rhodium plating" at one point or another.  Rhodium plating is a common industry practice that is used to plate white gold.  At ken + dana design, we offer both rhodium-plated and non-rhodium plated options in our 14k and 18k white gold.

The image below shows two 14k white gold engagement rings -- one with rhodium plating (bottom) and the other without rhodium plating (top).  You can see that the ring with rhodium plating has a bright white finish, while the ring without rhodium plating has a softer, slightly grayish-yellow tone.

The truth about white gold is that there is actually no such thing as "white gold". Gold itself is a yellow-metallic element that is quite soft.  As a result, gold is often mixed with other metals to produce an alloy.  An alloy is simply a mixture of two or more metals.  White metals are combined with gold to create a white gold alloy, which still retains a slight grayish-yellow cast before rhodium plating.  Some people actually prefer this unique color, as it creates more of an organic feel that compliments our sculptural aesthetic.  However, most clients prefer the bright white color that is traditionally associated with engagement rings -- this is where the rhodium plating comes in.

Image: Pure Rhodium Bead

Rhodium is a precious metal that is part of the platinum family. It is more expensive than gold and has a shiny white quality to it that makes it perfect for plating white gold.  Rhodium plating does wear off after time and the rate at which it wears depends on a number of factors, including body oils, exposure to lotions/creams/fragrances, and abrasive conditions. Some of our clients have had their white gold engagement rings for years without the patina ever fading, while others have required re-plating after a year.  You can pro-long the life of your rhodium plating by treating your jewelry with care, which means keeping it away from harmful conditions and storing it in your jewelry box after each wear.  And don't worry -- we offer re-plating services for a nominal fee to restore your ring's bright white color.

A row of glittering diamonds and gems!

from left: (Sienna, Dahlia, Colette (emerald), Colette (CPQ), Devi, Aurora)

Thought we'd give you guys a look at some of the new additions to our one-of-a-kind collection.  Each piece is handmade in NYC using recycled metals.

The Sienna is really unique in that it was created in 14k white gold, without rhodium plating.  Rhodium is a precious metal (actually more costly than gold) that is used for plating white gold jewelry.  Since gold is actually yellow in color, it is alloyed with whiter metals to create a soft white color, which is then plated with rhodium to give it a bright chrome-like hue.  While we like the classic look of rhodium plated gold, we love the natural color of white gold too -- it creates the perfect base for the organically inspired Sienna.

The original Colette (with Central Park quartz) was so popular, we decided to create an emerald version too.  The nature-inspired details and textured prongs offer richness and depth to this 14k yellow gold creation.  And the 1.88 carat emerald center stone isn't too shabby either!

And last, but certainly not least, is the Aurora.  The Aurora is probably one of the most popular rings in our KDD Classics collection.  It is the perfect mix of sculpture and tradition.  Since our classic collection requires a 4-6 week production period (we are able to accommodate rush jobs as well), we decided to create a one-of-a-kind version of the Aurora that is ready to ship immediately after sizing!  This piece features an 0.25 carat round brilliant diamond set in Platinum for just $2,200.

And remember that all of our one-of-a-kind pieces can be shipped out immediately after sizing.  Sizing generally takes about 7-10 business days.

I knew that when I got engaged, my ring would be me. It would be incredibly unique and  I would recognize it when I saw it.  About 3 years ago, I saw the first sketches of the Sundara...and the rest is history.

With that being said, it's important that you look for an engagement ring that is an extension of you as well.  If you're looking for a special engagement ring that speaks to you, I would encourage you to keep an eye on our Private Collection.  This eclectic collection is updated regularly with engagement rings that I have collected over the years from estate sales, vintage shopping excursions and industry events.  They all fall under $2000, with most of them being under $1000.

The images above feature pieces from our Private Collection that were taken with my heirloom diamond eternity band.  I took these pictures to illustrate how much drama you can add to an already gorgeous ring with your wedding band.  If your prefer something more understated and organic, try the Clio wedding band.  For a thin band without diamonds, the Flora would be a great option.

My absolute favorites from the Private Collection are the Morgana and the Eva.  What are yours?

NEW Private Collection RUBY Engagement Rings

Rubies are a wonderful option if you're looking for a unique engagement ring.  Known as the King of Precious Stones, rubies are extremely strong (registering 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness) and feature a variety of vibrant red hues.  Do remember, that while rubies are very hard, they are not indestructible.  They should be treated with lots of TLC, just like the rest of your jewelry!

Of the many beautiful ruby legends and myths that surround this red gem, our favorite one says to always treasure and care for your ruby and to never let it become lackluster through neglect.

What a beautiful and symbolic way to start a union!

Ring Master - new unique engagement rings!

here are some images from the workshop.

Dana is working on two unique engagement ring additions: Collette + Sienna.

He sketches a few views of what he wants the ring to "feel like". Rather than draw a detailed schematic with every last detail he creates an image capturing the essence of his vision. The next step in his process is to make a master model from silver. Through hundreds of cycles of soldering and filing the ring takes shape.... becoming a 3D version of the original abstract sketch.

Dana says of his drawings:

"I use the drawings as a way of remembering my vision of the ring, which has more to do with the piece's over all "feeling" than the minute details. For me the individual details emerge only when I am physically making the ring. There is something about the process of manipulating the metal that cannot be replicated with paper and pencil."

The Collette + Sienna will be finished at the end of the summer.  As always, they will be created by hand  in recycled metals with conflict-free diamonds.  View our current selection of unique designer engagement rings here

Bike Chain Chandeliers

Lovely recycled bike chain chandeliers from talented sculptor Carolina Fontoura Alzaga who was kind enough to talk to us about her work + process

Images Courtesy of Alan J. Crossley

Q: Favorite Color? - My favorite color is rust, both green and orange because they have such richness to them. I love that rust is the manifestation of time.

Q: What attracts you to sculpture? why, when + how did you start? -  As opposed to painting or other forms of 2D art, sculpture is something you can walk around, see through and contemplate the play between positive and negative space, it engages its environment. I began to do sculpture in 2004 when was steeped in bike, DIY, and punk culture and I had an abundance of bike parts around me. I started to find beautiful ways to reconfigure these everyday forms.

Q:Where do you get all these bike chains? - I source my material from 110 bike shops all over the LA region.

KDD Engagement rings on a budget

Many of our clients fall in love with our KDD Classic Engagement rings, but can't quite afford the 1ct diamond and platinum option.  Not to worry.  Here are a few ways you can stay within your budget and still get the KDD setting you love:

Choose 18k white gold instead of platinum

If you're on a budget and prefer a white metal, try our 14k or 18k white gold option instead of platinum.  Our white gold options can be half the cost of platinum and gives you the a very similar look.  See The Aurora page for pricing.

Opt for a sapphire instead of a diamond

If you love the classic sparkle of a  diamond, but can't quite afford one, try a sapphire instead.  A number of our clients have decided to go this route and the overall result is very similar to that of a diamond engagement ring.  See the 1ct Sundara for Sapphire pricing.
Choose from our One-of-a-kind Collection

Our One-of-kind Collection was created to offer our clients truly special engagement rings.  Ken travels around the world to source exotic gemstones and each setting is designed around each individual stone. The Daisy (shown above) was created in 14k yellow gold and features a 6mm chocolate diamond.  This engagement ring is priced at just $495.

These are just a few of the ways in which we can create a beautiful engagement ring that fits a tight budget.  Feel free to contact us at to arrange a consultation.

Reverse Graffiti

We first came across reverse graffiti -- the process of removing dirt from walls to create art -- on inhabitat.

Reverse Graffiti, Reverse Graffiti San Francisco, Reverse Graffiti Paul Curtis, Reverse Graffiti project, Greenworks Reverse Graffiti, San Francisco Broadway Tunnel Reverse Graffiti, San Francisco Broadway Tunnel eco-art, San Francisco environmental art, San Francisco Broadway Tunnel mural

Reverse graffiti by Moose as part of an ad campaign by GreenWorks in San Francisco (via inhabitat)

Further reading was definitely required, and a post about reverse graffiti on Scholars and Rogues brings up some interesting points:

  • The medium is dirt – pollution on infrastructure, if you will. The “canvas” is a function of the very air we’re slowly choking on and it’s just about impossible to create a piece that doesn’t, at some level, embed a comment on environmental degradation.
  • Even more interesting, though, is that reverse graffiti is fighting a two-front war to survive. It can be destroyed by cleaning (the macro application of the very technique that created it) or by the continued accumulation of pollution, which generated the canvas in the first place.
  • One can’t help wondering at the socio-political implications embedded in the genre: your regular old garden variety spray can graffiti is illegal – it’s vandalism – but you can hardly be arrested for cleaning a wall, or parts of it, can you? (Although I guess a duly motivated gendarmery could find something to hassle you with, like creating a public disturbance or something – the cops do appear in the video below.) A sculptural take on a classic

Many of you are already familiar with our sculptural bridal collection.  For those of you who are not, here's a look at the "KDD Classics" -- the 5 rings that started it all and have become mainstays of our collection.

Aurora- simple and elegant

The Aurora is our sculptural take on a traditional engagement ring.  It features a wave-like band that elegantly contours the finger in your choice of recycled 18k gold or recycled platinum.  A brilliant conflict-free diamond sits atop the band in a classic 4-prong setting.  Also available in blue sapphire and yellow sapphire.  This piece is perfect for someone that seeks a classic solitaire with a little "something special".

Daya- sculptural and feminine

The Daya combines the art of sculpture with a classic solitaire in your choice of recycled 18k gold or recycled platinum.  A brilliant conflict-free diamond is encircled by sculptural arcs and and set in a  classic 4-prong setting.  Also available in blue sapphire and yellow sapphire.  The Daya is perfect for someone who prefers an artistic engagement ring that showcases a brilliant center stone.

Devi- nature inspired

The Devi is inspired by the essence of a delicate rose bud, complete with organic flourishes.  This sculptural beauty  is available in your choice of recycled 18k gold or recycled platinum.  A brilliant conflict-free diamond sits atop the band in a classic 4-prong setting.  Also available in green tourmaline, blue sapphire and yellow sapphire.

Sundara (available in 1ct and 2ct version)- artistic and bold

This extraordinary piece features our signature split shank, symbolizing the merging of two paths into one.  It is available in your choice of recycled 18k gold or recycled platinum with over 30 pavé set diamonds through out the band.  A brilliant conflict-free diamond is encircled by sculptural arcs and and set in a  classic 4-prong setting.  Also available in blue sapphire and yellow sapphire.  Ideal for someone who fancies a show-stopping engagement ring with an artistic edge.

It's pretty obvious that we're suckers for subversive art, as evidenced by our GUN collection -- series that turns bad gun parts into good jewelry.  So, when I came upon this tongue-in-cheek series of photographs transforming nasty potholes into a multitude of useful (and humorous)..stuff, I had to share!

I particularly love the 'Baywatch' photograph -- what's your fave?

Last Year's Loving Day Giveaway Winners

Bwana Mkubwa Clements, Katie Joe Mariko Schendel, and their beautiful family.

The winning entry from last year's Loving Day Bands Giveaway:

Katherine Joe Mariko Schendel and Bwana Mkubwa Clements (me) were married June 19, 2003. Katie and I are an interracial couple. Katie’s father was born in Tokyo to a Japanese woman and German soldier. My mother was born a few years earlier in Sapporo to a Japanese woman and an African American soldier. Both of our parents went on to marry outside their ethnicity during the end of the civil rights movement. Now Katie and I are proud to be the 3rd generation of interracial marriage on both sides of our family. Loving v. Virginia means the world to our family. It allows us to love freely and openly, without fear of persecution or prosecution. 388 honors and pays tribute to the hardships suffered by the bravest couples in our nation and offers the hope of love to those who seek it without borders. We honor Mildred Delores Jeter and Richard Perry Loving for their foresight and bravery. They made my love with Katie possible and gave it protection. I’m the luckiest man alive and it’s because of their determination and sacrifice. We’d be honored to wear the 338 US Loving vs Virginia rings.

Don't forget to enter the giveaway! You only have until June 10th 11pm EST!

Fine Jewelry Testimonials: Susan B.

by Susan B., Menlo Park, CA

My fiance and I bought my engagement ring from ken + dana, and we couldn't be happier.

I spent a long time looking at engagement rings, online and in person, and really came to feel that they all look alike. I've heard women get all worked up about whether a ring has 6 prongs instead of 4, as if this is the stuff of art. I found ken + dana on the web, in a search for Gaudi-inspired designs. I love their use of natural forms--leafy shapes, branching, twists and swoops--in many of their engagement rings.

I live in SF, but was able to visit the studio in NYC in December. We talked to Ken in person: he was friendly and helpful, answering our questions and offering advice. I also love that they think outside the "diamond + platinum/yellow-gold" box. Ken showed us a combination of a yellow-gold ring with a citrine in it, paired with a rose-gold band; the yellow stone really brought out the warmth of the rose gold. We ended up choosing a yellow diamond (which we purchased from another source) and the yellow-gold setting. We spent a long time researching stones, and Ken helped answer some of our questions, and found examples of other yellow gold + yellow diamond rings, so we could tell if we liked the combination. We're planning to come back to get the rose-gold wedding band.

As other reviewers have said, my ring is more than a ring: it's a piece of art on my hand, and I love wearing it and looking at it.

Thanks, Susan, and congratulations!  We're glad you're so happy with your ring!

Inspired by Gaudi

The wrought iron work of Antoni Gaudi inspired many pieces in the ken + dana design bridal collection such as the Gaudi Inspired Organic Engagement Ring (left) and the Sol Organic Engagement Band.

The Carmentes Organic Engagement Ring was also inspired by Gaudi's wrought iron sculptures.

Inspired by earth and nature, the design of the Gaia Organic Engagement Band was influenced by Gaudi's works as well.

The Dinner Party

If you're in the NYC area head to Brooklyn and check out The Dinner Party by artist Judy Chicago.  The Dinner Party toured six countries before becoming a permanent installation in the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum in 2007.

[caption id="attachment_4709" align="aligncenter" width="542" caption="Photo: © Aislinn Weidele for Polshek Partnership Architects"][/caption]

Excerpts from the curatorial overview on the Brooklyn Museum's site:

The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago is an icon of feminist art, which represents 1,038 women in history—39 women are represented by place settings and another 999 names are inscribed in the Heritage Floor on which the table rests.

Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party began modestly, in both concept and form. From the start, her aim was "to teach a society unversed in women's history something of the reality of our rich heritage."

Fine Jewelry Testimonials: Dylan

by Dylan

On March 25, 2011 at 2:37 pm

Simply said, it’s impossible to be any happier than I am with Ken + Dana Design.

We never actually met in person, nor did I personally inspect their work before deciding on the Organic Daya engagement ring, but Ken’s knowledge, attention to detail, and amazing customer service kept me comfortable and calm through the entire process.

The ring arrived very quickly, and it took my breath away when I opened the box. Their craftsmanship is absolutely stunning. It was exactly was I was looking for: organic lines, natural beauty, and full of symbolism.. Just a wonderful setting for the sapphire that I provided.

It was risky picking out a ring and stone without my fiancee’s input, but it turned out perfectly, and she LOVES it. Thanks Ken + Dana Design! Look forward to working with you for our wedding bands in 2012!

Thanks Dylan, we're so happy for both of you!  Congratulations!

Anniversary: GUN Collection

Inspired by the idea of taking an instrument that represents violence and re-framing it as a symbol of non-violence, we launched the GUN collection on March 4, 2010.  In the past year we've raised thousands of dollars to help prevent gun violence.  Proceeds of each sale from the GUN collection benefit the Bronx Chapter of the Brady Campaign, whose mission is:

to pass and enforce sensible federal and state gun laws, regulations, and public policies through grassroots activism, electing public officials who support common sense gun laws, and increasing public awareness of gun violence.

Read more about what the Brady Campaign does to prevent gun violence here.

In honor of the one year anniversary of the GUN collection launch, we're debuting a brass version of the Isaiah necklace for this week's battle ($75 battle, retail $145).

Robin Givhan for New York Magazine

image: fashion bomb daily

Found this article on Fashion Bomb Daily and had to re-post it for you guys (thanks Claire!).

This insightful article by Robin Givhan for New York Magazine addresses the idea of race in fashion.  She forces a conversation and asks major players to speak up and have an opinion (instead of taking the usual blasé approach). She says:

"Fashion pushes at the boundaries of political correctness in the name of creative freedom and buzz. But it often does it in a manner that is impish, sly, timid, and, at times, seemingly downright deceitful. How many times must we see a white model dressed in designer fare cavorting with the brown-skinned locals in India or Africa? Those who lead the cultural conversation about beauty, gender, and class biases can be shockingly uninterested in carrying on a dialogue about race—or simply unwilling to do so. I say, if you’re going to play with stereotypes, do it openly and honestly. After all, sometimes the culture needs to be challenged, even angered."

10% of each piece we sell from our GUN PROJECT gets donated to the Brady Campaign to prevent Gun Violence.

The Brady Campaign has been leading the fight in AZ for stricter Gun Laws:

"Arizona is one of only three states that allow residents to carry loaded, hidden guns without background checks. Arizona recently weakened its laws to allow guns in bars."

21-7 Magazine interviews ken + dana

"In college, I went to Home Depot, bought a door and made it into a desk because none were ever big enough for me." With this sentence, Ken has managed to reveal the science behind the success of the jewelry brand, Ken + Dana Designs.
Ken Leung and Dana Chin were roommates in college and both secured jobs on Wall St. upon graduation. Soon, Ken pulled the plug on his banking job and took on the responsibility of running the family's gemstone business and about a year later, Dana joined. Like the desks in college, their corporate jobs just hadn't been enough...

RIP Rammellzee – a true hip-hop visionary

Farewell to an artist, performer and iconoclast whose cosmic creations are likely to be puzzled over for decades to come

Jean-Michel Basquiat's cover for Rammellzee and K-Rob's Beat Bop

Cited as an inspiration by groups including the Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill and prefiguring the abstract styles of MCs such as Kool Keith and the Wu-Tang Clan, "Beat Bop" is a dizzying, 10-minute, freestyle toast, in which Rammellzee plays a worldly-wise, street-corner pimp. The record was funded by artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, a rival on the local art scene. Ramm had little time for Basquiat, who he saw as a rich‑kid interloper.

Read more about Rammellzee and his amazing legacy in Sunday's Observer:

Festival Fever

With an abundance of festivals taking place from spring through fall, it is only fitting that we give a shout out to the "it" girls of these major festivals!

Not to be outdone by Coachella, this years Glastonbury Festival in the UK was overloaded with the biggest and brightest girls of the music scene

The usual style contenders were in attendance. Festival veteran Kate Moss was fierce in black fish-net tights, a khaki jacket topped off with black nail varnish to complete her look. Our own style crush Alexa Chung was her usual quirky self ahead of the trends mixing a preppy lacoste shirt alongside a leopard print bag.

Many of you already know that I'm obsessed with Kate Moss- in the healthiest possible way :)

It actually goes beyond her having perfect cheekbones and a beautiful body

Forget how she looks on the red carpet.

She's one of those celebrities who makes her day to day outfits look chic and effortless...she can throw on a pair of wellies w/ shorts and a vest and look AMAZING!

Our favorite Cosby kid and 80's fashion icon- Lisa Bonet

I used to raid my mom's closet and layer EVERYTHING I could find- just to achieve her signature 80's boho look

Isn't it crazy how you can find people dressing exactly like this in NYC today...crazy how fashion comes 'round full circle!

Haiti Ghetto Biennale- 1 month before the earthquake

In December 2009, Tracey Moberly traveled to Port au Prince as an artist to partcipate in the first anual Ghetto Biennale.

Her photos are of downtown Port au Prince, an area that would be intensely damaged by the quake one month later.  It is also part of the UN-designated "RED ZONE", preventing aid from reaching these areas.

Thanks to Dazed and Confused for publishing such moving pictures from a country that seems to have been forgotten now that the media hype has simmered

Remember that you can STILL help Haiti via various organizations, such as the Red Cross

And our Hatian Relief necklace (RIGHTS collection) is still available

$30 dollars is donated to the Red Cross w/ every necklace purchased

Bwana Clements!

Katherine Joe Mariko Schendel and Bwana Mkubwa Clements (me) were married June 19, 2003. Katie and I are an interracial couple. Katie's father was born in Tokyo to a Japanese woman and German soldier. I'm the luckiest man alive and it's because of their determination and sacrifice. We'd be honored to wear the 338 US Loving vs Virginia rings.

Congratulations Bwana!

We'd like to thank ALL of you for sharing your stories with us...they were truly inspirational.

And a special thank you to Ken Tanabe of for picking the winning entry!

Raw Color - paint with veggies?

An interesting way to paint from artists Christoph Brach & Daniera ter Haar

In their own words -

"A visual research about vegetables and their powerful color. Vegetables are dismantled and purified to their visual essence 'RAW COLOR'. The harvested color is captured by a new process preserving their intensity on color cards. Categorized by shades and families a new map is created which shows their beautiful diversity. This projects reinterprets the vegetable and puts it into new context."

Channeling Lady Gaga much?

I've never been a fan of Christina Aguilera's look anyway, so maybe my opinion is a bit jaded...

To tick or not to tick...

Sad to say I've officially turned into one of those shoe obsessed bloggers that is constantly on the look out for the new "it shoe"...the shoe that makes you go immediately to the shopping site and put your size in your cart (while you decide)...because in your mind EVERYONE is your size and EVERYONE is desperately waiting to get their hands on this prized platform...

M.I.A swag on the cover of NYLON

Just got my new NYLON in the mail and was psyched to find M.I.A on the cover...

Love her style and everything she's done for women and people of color through her music (especially the way she smashes hyper-sexualized female stereotypes)

But,  does anyone else feel like she should talk more about her music and less about other artists and their biz (yup...she's quoted as saying that lady gaga "isn't pretty enough to be a popstar"...I'll keep my thoughts to myself on that one)

She also accused Gaga of swagger jackin' Grace Jones, Madonna, and...M.I.A

I dunno...still think she's dope as hell.

Maybe she should just put down the hater-ade for minute.

R.I.P Louise Bourgeois

"An artist can show things that other people are terrified of expressing"- Louis Bourgeois

The internationally revered artist whose intensely personal work was inspired by psychological conflict, feminist consciousness and a fertile imagination, has died. She was 98.

Bourgeois gave me my first glimpse of feminist art. While her works were extremely jolting (especially for a 16 year old), she taught me things about being a woman that I understand now more than ever.

Her sculptures were deeply provocative and she was often chastised by her male counterparts for being  "vulgar" and "obscene"

Now she's considered one of the most important artists in the world.

Here are some of my favorite pieces from the late, great Louise Bourgeois...

Though I'm generally not a huge fan of white, this dress is def an exception...amazing!

I cant' stop thinking of all the different ways I would wear it...

hmmmm....def with a pair of booties as pictured, but also with a pair of super sexy wooden platforms, maybe some black combat boots for a tough/tom-boy feel, flat gladiators for during the day

perhaps with the Alexander Wang booties I posted here

Dedicated to all you Wang-sters out there...

Okay, it's true...I literally have a new shoe obsession every couple of days.

Feel free to drop a comment about YOUR shoe prob to make me feel beter :)

While I haven't been able to find a designer bag that I'm in love with for over a year now, it seems like every major design house has been ON-POINT with their shoe game...right?!

So here it goes...I've been geeked-up over these Alexander Wang booties for a minute now...

[caption id="attachment_643" align="aligncenter" width="589" caption="Fringed Leather/Velvet Alexander Wang bootie "][/caption]

Found them on Colette this week...they have the BEST shoes ever.  The only prob is that their pieces are often exclusive, which means you end up hearting a pair that is 685 Euros...YUP, thats how much these bad boyz cost.

Check em out here

PS: Lemme know if any of u guys ends up snagging a pair...cuz in that case you should be buying some more b-side ;)

Street Style- Girls w/ GUNs

[caption id="attachment_435" align="aligncenter" width="645" caption="Snappin pics of Phoebe in Washington Square wearing the AR-15 Firing Pins Necklace layered w/ the Ruger FS Necklace"][/caption]

The GUN collection is a unsiex line that turns gun parts (triggers, plugs, firing pins etc... ) into jewlery! The end result is a bad ass collection that looks awesome, but also helps keep guns off the streets.

*10% of the proceeds from each piece sold is donated to the NYC gun buy back program

*each piece is individually numbered to track pieces sold for this cause

[caption id="attachment_445" align="aligncenter" width="614" caption="Phoebe in the AR-15 Firing Pins Necklace layered (shorter) w/ the Ruger FS Necklace (longer)"][/caption]

Name: Phoebe

Age: 19

"I like the use of mixed metals and matte texture- it creates a nice contrast..."

Phoebe is wearing the  AR-15 Firing Pins Necklace and the Ruger FS Necklace .

Most people think of our GUN line in terms of men's jewelry, but I'd like to remind you all that it's UNISEX!  That's right...a cute girl with barrettes and red lipstick looks just as amazing as a guy does!

Ok, enough of my girl power rant...

[caption id="attachment_450" align="aligncenter" width="614" caption="Phoebe in the AR-15 Firing Pins Necklace layered (shorter) w/ the Ruger FS Necklace (longer)"][/caption]

I'll post pics of some fellas  in the GUN collection next week...

RIGHTS necklace for Haiti Relief

[caption id="attachment_129" align="aligncenter" width="504" caption="b-side design battle HAITI RIGHTS necklace"]b-side design battle HAITI RIGHTS necklace[/caption]

This special DESIGN BATTLE piece was designed in the wake of the horrific earthquake in Haiti as a way for us to take part in the relief efforts. Living in New York is a daily reminder that we are all immigrants and in a sense we are all Haitian’s right now. This Public Law (PUB.L.) abolished the national-origin quotas that had been in place in the United States since the Immigration Act of 1924.

References the 236th Public Law enacted by the 89th Congress of the United States
